Chapter 54- The Ambush
The ambush erupted like a storm. Ramalinga’s warning barely left his lips before masked figures burst from the grass, their blood-curdling screams slicing through the heavy silence. Curved swords flashed in the sunlight, each strike promising death, their eyes burning with hatred beneath the black cloth that concealed their faces.
The five defenders tightened their circle, steel and sinew braced against the onslaught. They were surrounded, hemmed in by shadows and steel, the grasslands transformed into a battlefield. These were no ordinary marauders, their movements were precise, their strikes calculated. Professional assassins, trained to kill without mercy, had descended upon them. The air rang with the clash of metal, the cries of rage, and the pounding of hearts that refused to yield.
The clash was sudden and brutal. Steel rang against steel as Ramalinga swung his sword, parrying and thrusting with practiced precision, each strike echoing like thunder across the grasslands. Timappa fought like a whirlwind, his sickle flashing arcs of death, two assassins fell, their cries cut short as they crumpled to the earth.
From behind, two more lunged at Ramalinga, but Mallanna and Basavanna were ready, their spears shot forward with deadly accuracy, piercing the attackers’ backs and dropping them mid-charge. At the circle’s heart, Chenchi stood unyielding, her bowstring taut, her eyes steady. She unleashed a volley of arrows, each finding its mark with unerring precision, striking throats and silencing screams before they could rise.
The assassins pressed from all sides, but the five held their ground, a fortress of blades and resolve. The din of battle rose, steel clashing, cries of rage, the hiss of arrows, and the sacred path to the shrine was transformed into a crucible of survival.
The battle had turned into sheer carnage. The assassins poured endlessly from the grass, their masked faces and flashing blades surrounding the circle like a tide that refused to ebb. Ramalinga’s sword carved through armor and flesh, each strike a desperate attempt to hold the line, but even he knew the futility of fighting wave after wave.
With a sharp motion, he signaled the others, this was no fight to win, but a fight to survive. “To the gorge!” his eyes commanded, even if his lips did not. Timappa slashed furiously, clearing a path, while Mallanna and Basavanna thrust their spears to keep the assassins at bay. Chenchi loosed arrow after arrow, her bowstring singing as she covered their retreat.
Ramalinga carved a path through the grass, his sword flashing as two assassins fell, their bodies writhing in the dust. The troupe pressed forward, Mallanna, Timappa, and Basavanna forming a protective ring around Chenchi, their weapons raised, their breaths ragged in the sweltering heat.
But before Ramalinga could take another step, a massive hand clamped around his neck from behind. The grip was iron, crushing, pulling him backward with brutal force. He twisted, eyes widening as he caught sight of the assassin, a stocky brute, masked, his curved blade already raised for the killing blow. The world seemed to narrow to that moment, the hiss of grass, the cries of battle, the suffocating grip that threatened to end him.
The circle faltered, the others turning in alarm, weapons poised, but knowing one wrong move could cost Ramalinga his life. His cry tore through the chaos, his voice hoarse, strangled by the crushing grip around his neck. “Don’t stop ,keep going to the bridge! I will come soon!” he gasped, each word forced out against the assassin’s tightening hold. His hands clawed desperately at the massive arm choking him, veins straining, breath faltering.
The others froze for a heartbeat, torn between loyalty and survival. Chenchi’s eyes widened, her bow trembling as she fought the urge to turn back. Mallanna and Basavanna tightened their grip on their spears, their bodies coiled with rage, while Timappa’s sickle gleamed, ready to strike. Yet Ramalinga’s command was clear, his sacrifice meant their escape.
The grass rustled violently around them, the assassins pressing closer, their screams echoing across the gorge. The rope bridge swayed in the distance, salvation hanging by a thread, while Ramalinga struggled against the brute’s crushing grip, his sword slipping from his hand as the world narrowed to the fight for breath.
Ramalinga’s lungs burned as the assassin’s knee pressed harder into his neck, the world narrowing to a suffocating blur. His legs kicked wildly against the ground, desperate for leverage, but the brute’s weight was immovable. His vision began to darken, each breath ragged, each heartbeat pounding like a drum of doom.
Then, his fingers brushed against something solid, the rough edge of a stone lying in the dirt. Summoning the last reserves of his strength, he clawed it into his grip. With a guttural cry, he hurled it upward, every ounce of fury and desperation behind the throw.
The stone struck true, smashing against the assassin’s masked face. A howl of pain erupted as the grip loosened, the knee lifting just enough for Ramalinga to gasp a lungful of air. His chest heaved, his body trembling, but his spirit surged,he was not finished yet. The circle of battle still raged around him, and now, freed from the brink, he had a chance to rise again.
Ramalinga’s desperate strike had bought him a heartbeat of freedom. The stone had staggered the assassin just enough for him to wrench himself out of the chokehold, gasping for air as life surged back into his lungs. The brute lunged again, ferocious and unrelenting, but Ramalinga met him head-on. With a sudden burst of strength, he grabbed the man’s legs, dragging him down into the grass.
The assassin howled as Ramalinga twisted one leg with brutal force, the sickening crack of bone echoed through the clearing. Pain contorted the masked face, rage turning to shock. Wasting no time further, in one swift, merciless motion, he drew his dagger and slashed across the throat silencing the cry. The assassin writhed, gasping for life, his body convulsing before collapsing into the grass.
Around him, the battle still raged, but Ramalinga rose from the ground, bloodied yet unbroken, his eyes blazing with defiance. The circle of five was battered but intact, their path to the rope bridge still open, though the horde pressed ever closer, and the gorge loomed like a final trial.
Ramalinga staggered toward the bridge, his sword clenched tight though his torso bled from deep cuts. Each step was a battle against exhaustion, his blade flashing as he struck down assassins who barred his way, swift parries, brutal thrusts, steel tearing through flesh. One fell with a cry as Ramalinga’s sword pierced his chest, another’s head flew with a single stroke, the grasslands stained red with blood.
They dashed onto it, the bridge trembling beneath their weight, each step a gamble between survival and death. The gorge yawned below, a chasm of white water and jagged rocks, promising a swift end to anyone who slipped. They could not afford haste, yet the assassins pressed closer, their masked faces flashing through the tall grass, blades raised, voices shrieking with bloodlust.
The troupe moved in tense rhythm,Ramalinga leading, his sword dripping crimson, Chenchi clutching her bow, eyes darting between the planks and the shadows behind; Mallanna, Timappa, and Basavanna forming a shield at the rear, spears and sickles ready to strike at any who dared set foot on the bridge.
Every step forward was a battle against fear, every heartbeat a reminder that the bridge was both salvation and peril. And behind them, the horde gathered at the edge of the gorge, preparing to follow.
The bridge swung wildly, pendulum-like, as the rapids thundered below between the towering cliffs. Each plank creaked under their weight, the ropes straining as the five clung tighter, their knuckles white against the coarse fibers.
“Do not look down,” Ramalinga commanded, his voice hoarse but resolute. The words were a lifeline, cutting through the chaos as spears and arrows rained upon them. The assassins lined the gorge’s edge, their assault relentless, shafts whizzed past, some grazing by mere inches, others splintering into the wooden planks beneath their feet.
Chenchi’s breath caught as she felt Ramalinga’s arm wrap protectively around her. His body shielded hers, even as arrows struck deep into his left shoulder. He winced, the pain flashing across his face, but his grip did not falter. Blood seeped through his tunic, staining the ropes, yet his eyes remained fixed ahead, unyielding, determined to see her safely across.
The bridge swayed harder, the abyss roaring beneath them, every step a perilous gamble. Behind, Mallanna, Timappa, and Basavanna fought to keep the assassins from setting foot on the bridge, their weapons flashing as they held the line. The path forward was narrow, the danger immense, but their resolve burned brighter than the fear that threatened to consume them.
Timappa’s scream tore through the roar of the rapids, his body jerking as the lance pierced deep into his thigh. Blood streamed down his leg, staining the planks beneath him, and his grip on the rope tightened with desperate strength. The bridge swayed violently, each movement threatening to hurl them into the abyss below.
Mallanna and Ramalinga rushed to his side, their faces etched with alarm, hands reaching to steady him. But Timappa, teeth clenched against the agony, shoved them away with sudden force. “Go!” his eyes blazed, his voice raw with pain and defiance. He would not be the reason they faltered.
Behind them, arrows and spears continued to rain down, whizzing past, splintering wood, grazing flesh. The assassins pressed closer, their cries echoing across the gorge, while the bridge groaned under the weight of battle and desperation. Ahead lay salvation, but every step forward demanded sacrifice.
Timappa’s wound gushed blood as he yanked the lance free, his face contorted in agony. Yet even in pain, his resolve held firm. With a swift motion, he unfurled his turban, tying it tightly around his thigh, the makeshift bandage stemming the flow for now. The bridge swayed beneath him, the rapids roaring below, but his eyes locked on the horde closing in.
Gripping the lance with both hands, he steadied himself against the ropes, summoning every ounce of strength left in his battered body as he hurled the lance forward with a guttural cry. The weapon flew true, piercing through the armor of one assassin. The man staggered, his scream echoing across the cliffs as he toppled backward, arms flailing, before plunging into the abyss. The rapids swallowed him whole, his cry fading into the roar of water.
The others froze for a heartbeat, stunned by Timappa’s defiance. Sweat drenched their bodies, fear gnawed at their hearts, yet his act rekindled their fire. The bridge still stretched ahead, salvation swaying precariously, but now the assassins knew, the five would not yield easily.
